Most current dishwashers use a manual filter that has to be cleaned by hand, and many owners do not know it is there. Grease and food collect in it, the wash water gets dirtier, and the machine starts leaving film, grit and smells behind. A maintenance visit removes and cleans the filter, clears the spray arm jets, descales where the water is hard, checks the door gasket and the drain hose loop, and looks at the base pan for early signs of a leak. Check it monthly and clean it whenever you see debris, more often if you load dishes without scraping them. It usually twists out from the floor of the tub and rinses under the tap with a soft brush. ### Why does my dishwasher smell? Food trapped in the filter and the sump, water standing in a partly blocked drain, or grime along the bottom of the door. Cleaning those three places clears most smells. A smell that returns within days suggests a drain problem. ### What causes a white film on glasses? Hard water minerals are the usual cause, made worse by too little rinse aid or detergent. Etching, which is permanent, looks similar; if vinegar wipes the film away it was minerals. ### Does pre-rinsing dishes help? Scraping helps; rinsing under the tap generally does not.
