By the mid-nineteenth century its early Federal and Greek Revival houses had been replaced by sturdier structures of masonry and cast iron.

Older housing stock

Older houses were never plumbed for dishwashers. The one here was added later, often draining into a sink trap and an old galvanized or cast iron line that narrows with age, so a slow drain can live in the house as easily as in the machine.

Tower living

A dishwasher on a high floor sits above someone else's ceiling. A drip from a supply hose or a worn tub seal that would only warp a cabinet in a house can reach the unit below, which is why a leak up here is handled as an emergency rather than an annoyance.

Small kitchens

Small kitchens get 18-inch dishwashers, or none at all until someone retrofits one beside the sink. In a narrow tub every inch of rack is used, and a single loose utensil or a shard of glass can stop a spray arm or jam the pump.
