Start with what you own

Dishwasher
types,
told apart.

The word dishwasher covers machines that are built and serviced very differently. A panel-ready model has to come out from under its cabinet front, a drawer unit is really two small washers stacked together, and a compact one has less room around every part. Knowing yours settles much of the question before a technician arrives.

What a repair
usually costs.

A practical test: set the repair against the price of a dishwasher that fits the same opening. A standard 24-inch built-in is easy to replace, so a wash motor on an older basic model often is not worth fitting. A panel-ready unit, a drawer or an ADA-height machine is harder to match, and that keeps the repair worthwhile further up the scale.

Diagnostic visit: No price is named until a technician has watched the dishwasher run.

RepairRelative costNotes
Filter and spray arm cleaning lowest Often all a dishwasher that leaves grit, film or a smell actually needs, and cheaper than any part below it.
Door latch, hinge springs or cables low A dead machine with its lights on, or a door that drops open, usually ends at one of these small parts.
Drain pump or drain hose low Standing water after the cycle, once the filter, the disposer inlet and the air gap have been cleared.
Water inlet valve or float switch low The usual answer to a dry hum at the start of a cycle or an overfill shutdown.
Detergent dispenser assembly low A lid that stays shut or will not latch, once loading has been ruled out.
Door gasket, hose or pump seal leak low Most leaks end at a seal or a connection; a cracked tub is the rare exception that changes the answer.
Heating element, thermistor or high-limit moderate Cool dishes and very long cycles. Where the heater sits inside the pump housing, the part is larger and the band moves up.
Control board, keypad or sensor moderate Priced against the model, and tested against its inputs first so a sound board is not replaced.
Circulation pump or wash motor highest The largest part in most dishwashers, and the repair where age and model decide whether it is worth doing.

Questions about
the types.

How do I tell which type of dishwasher I own?
Look at the door front and the controls. A cabinet panel with the buttons on the top edge of the door means panel-ready; pull-out drawers mean a drawer model; a narrow door or a unit on the counter means compact. Each type page lists the signs, and the model number confirms it.
Why does the type count for more than the brand?
The type decides how the machine is fitted, how a technician reaches its pump and valve, and what swapping it would take. Two brands of standard built-in wear in similar places; a drawer model and a built-in from one maker do not.
Does the type affect what a repair costs?
Often more than the part does. A dishwasher that has to be slid out, with its custom panel and toe kick removed and refitted, takes longer to service than one that slides straight out. The type also tends to settle whether repairing it is worthwhile.
What should I mention about the installation when booking?
Whether it sits under a counter or on it, whether it has a cabinet panel on the door, and whether it drains through the garbage disposal. Those details shape how long the visit takes and what the technician carries in.
