Should I rinse dishes before loading them?
Scrape, do not rinse. Modern detergents use enzymes that need some soil to work on, and many machines measure how dirty the water is to choose the cycle length. Fully rinsed dishes can end up with a cycle that is too short.
Why is only the top rack dirty?
The upper arm is fed through a tube from the pump, so a loose connection, a blocked nozzle or a tall item on the bottom rack in its path starves it. Check that the upper arm turns and that its feed tube lines up with the rack.
Could my water be the problem?
Hard water leaves a white film and reduces detergent performance, and cool water leaves grease. A rinse aid and a hotter water heater setting often solve problems that look mechanical.
Is a more expensive detergent worth trying?
It can help with hard water or heavy soil, but it will not rescue a spray arm that does not turn or a filter that is clogged. Sort out the mechanical side first, then compare detergents.
