What the dishwasher drain pump repair
involves.

Water that stays in the bottom of a dishwasher has four places to be stuck: the filter and sump, the drain pump, the drain hose, or the connection under the sink. The pump is the part people name first, yet a crushed hose, a disposer knockout plug never removed after installation, or a clogged air gap causes the same result. A drain repair traces the path from the sump to the sink in order, and replaces the pump only when it hums without moving water or has a jammed impeller.

How the visit goes

Drain and pump repair,
step by step.

Check the disposer inlet and the sink trap, then confirm a full drain on a test cycle.

01

Bail out the standing water and clear the filter, then check whether the tub drains on a fresh cancel-and-drain command.

02

Test the drain pump for power and listen for a hum against a jammed impeller, often caused by glass or a pit.

03

Follow the drain hose for kinks and blockages, including the high loop or the air gap at the sink.

04

Check the disposer inlet and the sink trap, then confirm a full drain on a test cycle.

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

In Tampa Bay kitchens, a dishwasher that holds water often shares its drain with a garbage disposal, so the technician checks the disposal inlet and the high loop before replacing the drain pump.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Vacation rental homes near Orlando's theme parks see guests load dishwashers without scraping plates, and the drain pump and filter take the brunt of that habit week after week.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

A backed-up sink drain in a Miami high-rise can push water out of the dishwasher and toward the neighbor below, so drain repairs there cover the sink connection and trap as well as the pump.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

In older New York apartment buildings, a dishwasher usually drains through a sink trap tied into decades-old piping, and a sluggish building line can look exactly like a failed pump until both are tested.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Houston homes on slab foundations run their kitchen drains beneath the floor, so when a dishwasher will not empty, the technician confirms whether the pump or a slow line under the slab is responsible.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

Cast iron drain lines in older Chicagoland buildings narrow with buildup over the years, and a dishwasher pump fighting that restriction may hum and leave standing water even though the pump itself is sound.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Countertop air gaps are a common sight in Los Angeles kitchens, and a clogged one sends drain water spilling into the sink or onto the counter, which is cleared before any pump is ordered.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

Hard water scale can stiffen a drain check valve and coat the pump impeller in San Diego dishwashers, so a slow drain there is inspected for mineral buildup as well as food debris.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

In compact Bay Area kitchens where the dishwasher shares cramped under-sink space with a disposal and a filtration system, a kinked or crushed drain hose is a frequent find during drain repairs.

Questions about
the dishwasher drain pump repair.

Why did my dishwasher stop draining right after a new disposer was installed?
A new disposer ships with a knockout plug in its dishwasher inlet. If nobody punched it out, the drain hose connects to a closed port and the tub fills with gray water on the first cycle. It is a short fix and not a failed pump.
Is a little water in the bottom normal?
A small amount around the sump, under the filter, is by design on many models because it keeps the seals wet. Water that covers the tub floor or reaches the lower spray arm is not normal and means the drain path is blocked or the pump has stopped.
Can a broken glass stop the pump?
Yes. A shard, a cherry pit or a bread tie that gets past the filter can lodge in the impeller. The pump then hums without turning. Sometimes clearing it saves the pump; if the impeller or its shaft is damaged, the pump is replaced.
Should I pour drain cleaner into the dishwasher?
No. Chemical drain openers can damage the pump seals and the plastic sump, and they leave a hazardous pool for whoever opens the machine next. Clean the filter, check the sink drain, and call if the water is still there.
