Dishwasher
repair cost,
band by band.
Bands rather than prices, because the same repair costs differently on a freestanding unit and on a built-in. What does not change is the order — the cheap causes are also the common ones — or the rule that decides repair against replace.

No price is named until a technician has watched the dishwasher run.
Every figure on this page is a band, not a quote. Standing water can be a clogged filter cleared in minutes or a pump that has to be replaced, and nobody can tell which over the phone. A firm number given before anyone has watched the machine run is a guess, or the price of the worst case. You get the actual price of the actual repair before any work begins, and the decision is yours.
The bands, job by jobFind out what the diagnostic visit costs, and whether that amount comes off the repair, when you book rather than on the invoice.
Expect a price for the named repair once the cause is found, and expect it before you approve any work.
Expect a straight answer when the dishwasher is not worth fixing.
Telling you that is part of the visit.
What a repair
usually costs.
A practical test: set the repair against the price of a dishwasher that fits the same opening. A standard 24-inch built-in is easy to replace, so a wash motor on an older basic model often is not worth fitting. A panel-ready unit, a drawer or an ADA-height machine is harder to match, and that keeps the repair worthwhile further up the scale.
| Repair | Relative cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Filter and spray arm cleaning | lowest | Often all a dishwasher that leaves grit, film or a smell actually needs, and cheaper than any part below it. |
| Door latch, hinge springs or cables | low | A dead machine with its lights on, or a door that drops open, usually ends at one of these small parts. |
| Drain pump or drain hose | low | Standing water after the cycle, once the filter, the disposer inlet and the air gap have been cleared. |
| Water inlet valve or float switch | low | The usual answer to a dry hum at the start of a cycle or an overfill shutdown. |
| Detergent dispenser assembly | low | A lid that stays shut or will not latch, once loading has been ruled out. |
| Door gasket, hose or pump seal leak | low | Most leaks end at a seal or a connection; a cracked tub is the rare exception that changes the answer. |
| Heating element, thermistor or high-limit | moderate | Cool dishes and very long cycles. Where the heater sits inside the pump housing, the part is larger and the band moves up. |
| Control board, keypad or sensor | moderate | Priced against the model, and tested against its inputs first so a sound board is not replaced. |
| Circulation pump or wash motor | highest | The largest part in most dishwashers, and the repair where age and model decide whether it is worth doing. |
What the diagnostic
visit covers.
The first visit decides what the repair actually is. The fee, and whether it is credited against the repair, is said when you book, before anyone comes out.
The diagnostic visitWatching the dishwasher fill, wash and drain, with the water level and temperature checked rather than assumed.
Checking the simple causes first: the filter and sump, the supply shut-off, the drain hose loop, loading and detergent.
Testing the suspect components, such as the pumps, the inlet valve, the heater, the latch switch and the sensors, instead of replacing on a guess.
A plain account of the failed part, the work it takes and its price, or a straight answer that this dishwasher is not worth the repair.
What moves
the price.
Five things decide where in its band a repair lands. None of them is known for certain until a technician has seen the dishwasher.
The typesType and access
A standard built-in is reached through the toe kick and slides out on its brackets. A panel-ready unit adds a custom front that has to come off and go back level, and drawers and compact machines leave little working room under the tub. The same part can take very different amounts of time.
Which part, and whether it is on the van
Latches, springs, valves and drain pumps are at the low end. A control board, or a circulation pump with the heater built into it, moves the job up the scale. A part the technician carries can be fitted on the first visit; one ordered for the model means a return trip.
Damage beyond the part
A leak that ran for weeks can soften the subfloor or swell the cabinet base, and a shorted pump can take the control board with it. The repair is priced for what failed, but you are told about any damage found alongside it.
Make and parts availability
Widely sold makes have parts that are easy to find and moderately priced. Premium and imported makes often carry costlier parts and longer lead times, and a part no longer made can decide the repair-or-replace question on its own.
Number of visits
A repair finished on the diagnostic visit costs less than one that needs a second trip. Giving the model number from the door edge when you book is the easiest way to raise the odds of a single visit.
Not every dishwasher
breaks the same way.
A panel-ready model hides behind a cabinet front, a drawer unit washes in two halves, and a compact one may sit on the counter. Find the one you have.
All dishwasher types
Built-in dishwasher
The standard 24-inch machine under the counter, and the one nearly every American kitchen has.
Panel-ready dishwasher
Hidden behind a cabinet door, controlled from the top edge, and repaired with the panel's weight in mind.
Dishwasher drawer
One or two independent drawers that pull out like cabinet drawers, each with its own tub, pump and seal.
Compact dishwasher
The 18-inch and ADA-height machines for small kitchens, where the tight tub changes both loading and repairs.
