Viking dishwashers,

Viking's current dishwashers are 24-inch units in 3, 5 and 7 Series, sold either with an installed Professional stainless panel or ready for a custom or Viking color panel, and some come with a built-in water softener. Inside they are European-style machines with a concealed flow-through heater, a turbidity sensor and a three-part filter, so they are diagnosed differently from American-style dishwashers.

What is particular
to Viking.

The range splits into VDWU models with an installed stainless Professional panel and FDWU models for a custom or Viking color panel, with WS versions carrying the water softener. Many kitchens still have older Viking dishwashers from earlier generations, so the model plate decides which manual and which parts apply.

E:01 and E:02 mean two different things

E:02 flashes when the dishwasher cannot take in water; the program pauses and resumes by itself once supply returns. E:01 means the machine sensed too much water or a leak and is trying to pump it out, and if it does not clear, it needs a technician.

Three filters, cleaned weekly

Viking asks for a micro filter, a coarse filter and a flat metal or plastic filter to be cleaned at least once a week, and says never to run the dishwasher without them. A second small filter sits in the inlet hose to catch sand and rust, and when it clogs the dishwasher fills slowly.

Softener models need the right salt

On water-softener models the reservoir takes about 4.4 pounds of special dishwasher salt, never table salt or rock salt. Viking warns that spilled salt can corrode or scratch metal inside, so rust-like marks or white residue on a softener model are checked against the salt lid before anything else.

A hidden heater and fan drying

Water is heated by a concealed flow-through heater rather than an exposed element, and a fan circulates air to dry the load. Viking requires 120°F incoming water, and a sensor sets the drying time by reading the rinse aid, so poor drying starts with the water temperature and the rinse aid level.

Parts

Viking's color door panels and Professional handle kit for FDWU models are separate accessories in many named finishes, and they are the slow items to source. Filters, pumps and sensors are ordered by the model number.

Repair or replace

Viking's own coverage on electronic controls, racks, motor and pump assemblies and the water system runs five years, so check the installation date before paying for major parts. Outside that period, filter, heater, pump and sensor repairs are usually worth it, especially on a panel-matched unit.

My Viking dishwasher shows E:02. Is it broken?
Usually not. E:02 means the dishwasher could not take in water, for example because the supply valve is closed or the water was cut off. The program pauses and continues by itself once water returns. If the supply is on and E:02 stays, check the small filter in the inlet hose, then book a visit.
What does E:01 mean on a Viking dishwasher?
E:01 means the dishwasher detected too much water or a leak and is trying to pump it out. If it clears once the water is gone, find out what caused the overflow. If E:01 keeps flashing, the dishwasher needs a technician rather than another restart.
Why do my Viking's racks or silverware show rust spots?
On water-softener models, spilled dishwasher salt is a known cause: Viking warns that salt left around the filler can corrode and scratch metal. Close the salt lid tightly after filling and run Rinse & Hold to flush spilled grains. Marks that keep coming back are worth a look at the softener.
Does my Viking need dishwasher salt?
Only the water-softener (WS) models take salt, and only when your water hardness calls for it. The water hardness setting is adjusted in the dishwasher, and Viking notes it has to be set again if the dishwasher moves to another house.
