What is particular
to LG.

LG dishwashers come with front or top (integrated) controls, and with or without steam; current models carry QuadWash or QuadWash Pro, TrueSteam and ThinQ Wi-Fi with Smart Diagnosis. The model number tells the technician which drying system, filter set and code list to expect.

Drying depends on the generation

Earlier LG models used a hybrid drying system with no heating element: a fan pulls moist air into a condensing duct in the door, and rinse aid does much of the work. Later models such as the LDTH7972 list Dynamic Heat Dry and a hidden water heater, so a not-drying call starts by finding out which system is inside.

A three-piece filter you clean yourself

The filter assembly comes apart into a mesh filter, an upper STS filter and an outer filter, and LG recommends cleaning it after each load for best results. A clogged set shows up as OE, as poor cleaning or as odor.

Two-letter codes on the display

LG displays codes such as IE for water inlet, OE for drainage or clogged filters, AE (or E1) for a leak, HE for the heater circuit and LE for the motor. The code narrows the visit before anything is taken apart.

Spray power sent to one rack at a time

LG's variable spray alternates water between the upper and lower racks so the motor's full power goes to one rack at a time, and later models add QuadWash spray arms and a direct-drive motor. A change in the wash sound between racks is by design, not a failing pump.

Parts

Filters, racks and common sensors are usually available once the model is known. Control boards and motor assemblies for older generations are the parts most likely to need ordering ahead.

Repair or replace

Drain, fill and filter problems on an LG are almost always worth repairing. When an older hybrid-dry unit needs a motor or a control board, weigh the repair against the unit's age, and the technician will explain both options after the diagnosis.

My LG dishwasher leaves everything wet. Is the heater broken?
On LG's hybrid-dry models there is no heating element for drying at all: the heat held by the dishes and tub, a fan and a condensing duct in the door do the work, and LG says rinse aid plays an integral role. Check the rinse aid first. On newer Dynamic Heat Dry models, a heater or fan test is the next step.
What does OE mean on an LG dishwasher?
OE is a drainage problem. LG's list of causes includes a clogged, kinked or frozen drain hose and clogged filters, so the three-piece filter and the hose are checked before the drain pump.
The display shows PF. Did something break?
No. LG says PF is not an error code indicating a malfunction; it means the power went out or was interrupted. It clears after you press a button once the power is back.
Can the dishwasher tell the technician what is wrong?
Many LG models support Smart Diagnosis, which sends data from the dishwasher to a phone app. It only works if the dishwasher can be turned on, so a unit with no power is diagnosed the traditional way.
