What is particular
to Whirlpool.

The current Whirlpool range runs from entry models with a hybrid tub, a stainless inner door over a dark gray plastic tub, up to stainless-tub models with a third level rack. The model number tells you which filter design and cycle set you have, so it is read before anything else.

Filters you rinse by hand

Many Whirlpool models use a triple filtration system, with coarse, fine and micro-fine stages catching soil between wash stages. Whirlpool asks owners to rinse the upper and lower filters at least once a month, so gritty dishes or a sour smell usually start at a filter that has not been out in a while.

Some water in the sump is normal

Whirlpool keeps a small amount of water in the filter area between cycles, roughly halfway up, so the seals there do not dry out. A little water below the filter is by design; water standing across the tub floor after a finished cycle is a drain problem.

Cycle length follows the load

The Normal cycle with soil sensors, and the Sensor cycle on newer models, change wash action according to soil level, load size and water temperature. A long run on a heavily soiled load is the design working; a cycle that runs long every time, even on light loads, deserves a diagnostic visit.

New installs and the disposer plug

When a newly installed Whirlpool will not drain, Whirlpool's own checklist starts with the knockout plug in the garbage disposer inlet and a drain hose routed in a high loop. Both are installation details rather than failed parts, and both are quick to confirm.

Whirlpool Corporation builds its current 24-inch dishwashers to shared dimensions: its Spin&Load lower rack is sold to fit every 24-inch dishwasher the company made after 2018, across Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, JennAir and Amana. Common parts are widely stocked as a result; model-specific control parts are the ones more likely to need ordering.

Repair or replace

Most Whirlpool calls are drain, filter and fill problems with modest parts, and those are normally worth repairing. When the main control or the pump and motor fails on an older entry-level unit, compare the repair with a replacement before approving it.

There is water under the filter in my Whirlpool dishwasher. Is it broken?
Probably not. Whirlpool designs its dishwashers to hold a small amount of water in the filter area, about halfway up, to keep the seals from drying out, and that water is replaced at the start of the next cycle. Water covering the tub floor after a finished cycle is different and points at a drain problem.
How often should I clean the filter on a Whirlpool dishwasher?
Whirlpool recommends rinsing both the upper and lower filters under running water at least once a month. Lock the upper assembly back in place afterward: if it turns freely it is not seated, and running the dishwasher without the filters properly installed can damage it.
My new Whirlpool dishwasher will not drain. What should I check first?
If it drains into a garbage disposer, check that the knockout plug was removed from the disposer inlet, then check that the drain hose rises in a high loop under the counter. Both are on Whirlpool's own checklist for newly installed units, and neither needs a part.
Why does the Sensor cycle take so long?
The Sensor cycle and the Normal cycle with soil sensors adjust wash action based on soil level, load size and water temperature, so a dirty load or cool incoming water can lengthen the run. If every cycle runs long regardless of the load, book a visit so the heating and sensing circuits can be checked.
