What is particular

GE sells built-in dishwashers with front controls or hidden top controls, plus compact and portable models. The control style tells the technician where the controls sit and how the door has to be opened to reach them, so it is worth knowing before the visit.

A stuck float can stop the fill

When a GE dishwasher takes a cycle selection but never fills, GE's own manual points first at the flood float under the Ultra-Fine filter, the small part it describes as looking like a salt shaker. A float that has stuck up tells the control the tub is already full, which looks exactly like a dead water valve from the outside.

Active Flood Protect pumps water out

Many GE models watch the water level with a leak detector and pump water out when it rises too high, and models with leak detection cancel the cycle and show LEAK DETECTED. A GE that drains in the middle of a fill and stops is reacting to that sensor, so the useful question is what raised the water, not whether the pump works.

A disposer in front of two filters

GE pairs its Piranha hard food disposer, with stainless steel impellers, with an Ultra-Fine filter and a mesh Fine filter that GE asks owners to clean every other month. Dishes that feel gritty are GE's own sign that those filters are clogged, and it is the first thing to check on a not-cleaning call.

Options add a lot of time

Bottle Jets can add up to 23 minutes, Dry Boost can add up to 64, and the drying fan may keep running for another 90 minutes after the cycle ends. If the incoming water is cold, Auto Hot Start can add up to 25 minutes more, so a GE that seems to run forever is often doing what its options told it to do.

Parts

Filters, spray arms, pumps and control boards are listed by model through GE Appliances' own parts store, so the model number on the tub wall is what the order depends on. GE also names one specific cord kit, or hard-wiring, for the power connection, which matters whenever a unit is pulled out and reinstalled.

Repair or replace

Float, filter, pump, latch and control repairs on a GE are usually worth doing at any age. A basic older model that needs both a control board and a wash pump at the same time is the case where replacement deserves a real look.

My GE dishwasher lights up and accepts a cycle but never fills. Is the water valve bad?
Not necessarily. GE's manual lists a stuck flood float as a cause of exactly this: the float sits under the Ultra-Fine filter, and if it stays up the dishwasher behaves as if it is already full. Check that the water supply under the sink is on and the float moves freely before assuming the valve is the problem.
Why did my GE dishwasher drain and stop in the middle of a cycle?
Many GE models have Active Flood Protect, which pumps water out when the level rises too high, and models with leak detection cancel the cycle and show LEAK DETECTED. The dishwasher is protecting the floor. The real repair is finding what raised the water or where it escaped, which is worth a visit rather than repeated restarts.
Where is the model number on a GE dishwasher?
On a label on the left-hand tub wall, just inside the door. Its last two letters also tell you the door finish, such as SS for stainless steel or II for an integrated panel, which decides how the door front should be cleaned.
Why does my GE dishwasher take so long to finish?
Options add real time on GE models: Bottle Jets up to 23 minutes, Dry Boost up to 64, and cold incoming water can add up to 25 minutes of heating. GE asks for incoming water of at least 120°F, so running the kitchen tap hot before you start helps.
