What is particular
to Maytag.

Maytag sells front-control and top-control dishwashers, with Dual Power Filtration, the PowerBlast heavy-soil cycle and heated or fan-assisted drying spread across the range. PowerBlast relies on high-pressure jets and higher water temperatures, so a unit that cleans poorly on that cycle alone points toward water heating.

A chopper in the sump

Dual Power Filtration combines microfiltration with a four-blade stainless steel chopper. Maytag says a built-in chopper can make a grinding noise at different points in the cycle, so a grind on its own is not a failure; a new, louder grind, or one that arrives with a slow drain, usually means something hard has reached the chopper or filter.

The leak system stops the cycle

The Leak Identification System stops filling, drains the tub and flags that service is needed. It does not see leaks at the water inlet, the drain connections and hoses, or from a cracked tub or door, so a quiet leak sensor does not rule those out.

F8E4, the float and the drip tray

Maytag ties the F8E4 code to its leak hardware: a float switch and a drip tray under the tub. On a new install a loose supply fitting or an unplugged float switch can raise it, and so can the suds from hand dish soap used in place of dishwasher detergent.

A status light that tells you where it stopped

Top-control models show cycle progress on a front light that shines blue while washing, red while drying and white when complete. Noting the color when a cycle stalls tells the technician which stage it stopped in before the door is even opened.

Parts

Maytag's ten-year limited parts coverage names the racks, the chopper blade and the stainless steel tub, so check the purchase date before paying for any of those parts. Pumps, valves and electronics come from the shared family supply and are generally available.

Repair or replace

Most Maytag failures, such as the pump, a valve, the float switch or a jammed chopper, are worth repairing on a stainless-tub unit. A cracked tub or a failed control on an older unit is where replacement deserves a comparison.

Is the grinding noise from my Maytag dishwasher normal?
Often, yes. Many Maytag models have a built-in stainless steel chopper, and Maytag says it may make a grinding noise at different parts of the cycle. If the sound is new or harsher than usual, check the filter area for a foreign object; if it continues, book a visit.
My Maytag stopped, drained and shows F8E4. What happened?
F8E4 is tied to the leak hardware: water has reached the drip tray under the tub or the float switch has tripped. Excess suds from hand dish soap can cause it, and so can a loose supply fitting on a new install. Press Cancel once to silence the tone and again to clear the code; if it returns, book a visit, because water has to be found and the tray emptied.
Does the Maytag leak sensor catch every leak?
No. Maytag states that it will not detect leaks from the water inlet, the tub drain connections and hoses, or leaks caused by cracked tubs or doors. Water on the floor with no code on the display still needs to be traced.
What does the colored light on the front of my Maytag mean?
On top-control models it shows the cycle stage: blue while washing, red while drying and white when the cycle is complete. If a cycle stalls, note the color; it tells the technician where to start.
