A dishwasher door has to do two things at once: seal against the gasket and trip the switch that tells the control it is safe to run. A latch that will not catch is usually mechanical, either a broken latch part, a strike that has moved or a door that has dropped on a weak hinge spring. Can I tape the door shut to finish a load?
No. The latch switch is how the control knows the door is closed, and tape will not trip it. Worse, a door that is not latched can let water escape during the wash. Hand-wash the load instead.
Why does the door slam down when I open it?
The door springs or their cables have weakened or broken. That makes the latch harder to reach, and it is hard on the hinges and the floor. It is worth fixing at the same visit as the latch.
My custom panel door is heavier. Does that matter?
Yes. Panel-ready machines use springs matched to the panel weight. A panel heavier than the spring setting leaves the door dropping, and adjusting or changing the springs is part of the repair.
Could the gasket stop the door from latching?
A gasket that has swollen or come out of its channel can push back hard enough to keep the latch from catching. Look along the bottom and sides for rubber sticking out.
