What it

The detergent cup opens partway through the wash, when a small actuator releases its spring-loaded door. If the door never opens, the part is the dispenser. If it opens but the detergent is not rinsed away, the water is not reaching it with enough force or heat. Loading is behind a lot of these calls: a tall pan or a cutting board in front of the cup keeps it shut.

Can I just put the pod in the bottom of the tub?
As a temporary measure, yes. The detergent then dissolves during the prewash and much of it drains away early, so cleaning is usually a little weaker. It is fine for a few loads until the dispenser is fixed.
Why does the pod stick to the dispenser door?
Pods need to go into a dry cup. A wet cup makes the film start to melt and glue itself in place before the wash begins. Load the pod last, with dry hands.
The door opens right at the start of the cycle. Is that a problem?
Yes. Detergent released in the prewash drains away before the main wash. A latch that no longer holds is a small part and worth replacing.
Does the rinse aid dispenser use the same part?
On most machines, the detergent and rinse aid dispensers are one assembly with one actuator. If both have stopped working together, the actuator is the likely part.
