Hard-water minerals and undissolved detergent leave a deposit that comes off with vinegar; etching is permanent damage to the glass surface from soft water and too much detergent. How do I know if my water is hard?
White crust on faucets and showerheads is a strong hint. Your water utility's annual quality report lists hardness, and inexpensive test strips from a hardware store give a reading in a minute.
Can etched glasses be restored?
No. Etching removes a tiny layer of the glass surface. You can stop it from getting worse by using less detergent with softened water and skipping heated dry for fine glassware, but the cloudiness stays.
Does a water softener fix the residue?
It removes the minerals that cause spotting, which helps a lot. With softened water, cut back on detergent, because the same dose that suited hard water can start to etch glass.
Is it the dishwasher or the detergent?
Most of the time it is the water and the detergent together. The dishwasher becomes the suspect when a vinegar soak clears the glass, rinse aid is full, and the residue still returns, or when the load is also coming out cool.
