Long cycles are partly by design. Energy rules pushed dishwashers to use less water and lower heat for longer, so two to three hours on a normal cycle is now common. Beyond that, a machine lengthens its cycle when it waits for water to reach temperature, when a sensor sees dirty water and adds a rinse, or when the fill is slow. A stalled countdown is the most useful clue.
